We are going bananas will bowl games. At my last count there are about 352 bowl games during the next week.
I believe that every school in the nation, except for Michigan State, is participating in a bowl game. Even the likes of North Texas and New Mexico have managed to eek themselves into a holiday event.
I think that the bowl philosophy is, if you win you're in. Win only one game per season that is. Teams can pretty much quit after the first two games of the season . That single victory in the opening week guaranteed a spot in a bowl game.
Even Nebraska, who is enjoying one of the worst seasons in its history, has found itself in a bowl game.
Speaking of Nebraska -- heard a funny joke the other day.
What's the "N" on the Nebraska helmet stand for? Knowledge.
OK, it was funny at the time. Back to my column.
It is pretty difficult to keep up with the bowl games. One would have to watch ESPN 24/7 for the entire month of December to see all the post-season college action. I think they just want to compete with March Madness.
Maybe that is where college football is headed. You want a playoff system right? Then just grab 64 teams, pair them up in 32 bowls and that can be the beginning of your playoff system. I think even if you had a bowl for each game in each round of the tournament, there would be fewer bowls than there are right now.
The tournament could stretch on until March Madness begins, but that is OK. Just as long as they don't take away coverage from the NHL. The fact that ESPN now covers the NBA has already screwed hockey fans, but that is a rant for another column.
