Colony Days bed-race veteran Ryan Johnston, above, greases the wheels of the Midas bed racer Thursday afternoon. Johnston is a three-year veteran of the bed races and Midas in Palmer has had a team in the last five races. Their last win was in 2007. According to shop manager William Wright, the team usually has the running speed, but seems to get tripped up by pillow cases and changing diapers at one of the three racing stations. Preliminary racing action begins Friday at 6:30 p.m. at South Valley Way and East Elmwood Ave. Finals are Saturday at 10:30 a.m. on South Alaska Street in front of the Palmer Depot.
