Members of the Willow True Value Hardware team (pictured left to right) Kevin Knight, Otto Schropp, Paul Rieland and Duane Threlkeld inspect Duane’s shot during the 2011 Iditarod Restart Golf Tournament in Willow last weekend. This year a new duffer showed for the tourney and out shot the old timers. The men’s individual state champion of Winter Golf this year went to Joe Cappelleri, 31. Joe out-dueled the always-tough 84-year-old Emil Stancec 35 to 36 over the nine-hole course. Third place went to Jim Huston, who teamed with Emil, Dale Evans and Herman Spegel to win the team competition for the Willow Chamber of Commerce. Second place team honors went to the team sponsored by Alaska Industrial Hardware. AIH and the Bosch Tools teams provided a great cookout for all participants throughout the day. This year’s state champion women’s golfer is Willow’s Dagmar Hess. Dagmar edged Anchorage golfer Marian Estelle 42 to 45 to protect home ice. The annual event featured bright sunshine that drove away the morning chill and made the fashionable Hawaiian shirts of the Willow Hardware team seem appropriate attire. Proceeds went to the host team, Willow Chamber of Commerce, for charitable causes in Willow.
