It’s still alive!

To the editor:

I am the husband of a person who owns an assisted living home at Wasilla.

On Monday, Oct. 23, of this year I took a gentleman into KeyBank to cash one of his monthly checks that he receives. The bank would not cash the check even though he had his military ID and his veteran’s ID. When I questioned the teller why they would not cash his check, I was told that he did not have a current state ID, and the bank required that from everyone.

At that point I raised my voice so all could hear and said, “This man is a WWII veteran, 92 years old and a former buck private that was wounded and decorated in Africa. He has all of his military and veterans ID, and you would not cash his check?” The teller replied, “He must have a current state ID in order to cash checks here at this bank!”

I was disgusted and we left the bank disappointed. No sooner had we got in the car than a woman came up, opened the door, laid a $100 bill in his lap, shut the door and hurried off. My gentleman was astounded. “Why did she do that?” he asked. I told him that there are still good Americans, patriots with good hearts, who care about our veterans, our nation and our lives.

God bless this woman! If I ever see her again I am going to get her name, address and phone number. She clearly shows the true spirit of America and Christ giving testimony to the truth that the American spirit still lives in the hearts of many today.

I know there are enough of us who will not sell our way of life here in this great nation down the path of socialism. The true spirit of America is alive and well, regardless of what some may think or attempt to change and destroy. We are Americans and proud of it!
