JACK MATSON VanHYNING

Jack Matson VanHyning, 82, died Aug. 31, 2004 at Providence Alaska Medical Center, of a stroke.

Services will be held Sept. 9, 2004 in Astoria, Ore.

Mr. VanHyning was born May 10, 1922 in Livingston, Mont. He earned a doctorate degree in fisheries management and served in the Army Air Corps from 1943-1946.

Mr. VanHyning began his Alaska residency in 1968 in Fairbanks, where he stayed. He worked at the Oregon Fish Commission from 1948-1967 and then the University of Alaska Fairbanks from 1968 until his retirement. He worked on pre-gas-line stream impact surveys. Mr. VanHyning also worked as a consultant on related salmon issues, served as president of Nerka Inc., Alaska's first private nonprofit salmon hatchery, and was president of Aquabionics Inc. and ran an oyster farm from 1986-2002.

Mr. VanHyning was involved in the community with educational activities for schoolchildren in Fairbanks and with AARP and was an honorary member of the American Fisheries Society.

His interests were changes in the environment as related to a human presence, sport fishing, hunting, boating, and photography.

His family said he was, "Calm, steadfast in difficult times and cherished his family and close friends."

Mr. VanHyning is survived by his wife, Lois E. VanHyning, of Fairbanks; daughters, Janet K. Stephens of Simi Valley, Calif., and Julie A. Nock of Peoria, Ariz. ; son, Jon N. VanHyning of Wasilla; grandson, Shawn M. Nock of Tucson, Ariz. and Joseph E. VanHyning of Wasilla; granddaughters, Theresa M. VanHyning of Wasilla, Kristen M. Nock of Peoria, Ariz. and Jaclyn M. Stephens of Simi Valley, Calif.; sister, Jeanne E. McKinnou of Yuma, Ariz. and five first cousins.

Arrangements were made by Kehl's Palmer Mortuary in Palmer.
