JAMES A. MAW

James A. Maw, 57, joined his father, Roland Richard Maw Sr., and sisters, Mary Lou and Linda, in death on Saturday, July 10.

Mr. Maw was born Jan. 17, 1947, in Malheur County, Ore., and graduated from Brigham Young University in Utah with a bachelor's degree in education. He attended BYU on a full athletic scholarship in track and field and participated nationally and internationally in sprints, hurdles and relay teams.

He had a great love of adventure and for wide-open spaces, and brought his family to Alaska. Mr. Maw was an Alaska resident for 17 years.

While residing in Alaska, Mr. Maw taught in the education field in Anchorage and was involved in the commercial-fishing industry and sport-charter fishing in Cook Inlet and Prince William Sound.

His employment in the last 10 years was as an occupational health and safety manager in the oil industry. He worked in various places, from the North Slope to Adak, and most recently in Singapore. Mr. Maw recently completed his doctorate in occupational health and safety.

His family wrote, "Jim had a great love for his family and friends. He was always willing to help wherever he could or give friendly advice when asked."

Mr. Maw is survived by his wife, Terry, and their children, Todd Maw (Deena), Palmer; Jaron Maw, Roy, Utah; Aaron Brown (Misty), Clearfield, Utah; Jared Brown (Amber), Kenai; Kelly Ball (Tracey), Wasilla; Jamie Johnson (Steve), Roy, Utah; Jonika Blanke (David), Roy, Utah; Jeree Greenwood (Brandon), Syracuse, Utah; Julie Elmer (Rex), Ogden, Utah; Amy Terry (Rod), Syracuse, Utah; Jennifer Janes (Sean), Wasilla; Jillian Burrup (Parker), Kaysville, Utah. A posterity of 36 grandchildren is his treasure.

Mr. Maw is survived by his mother, Cleone Maw, St. George, Utah; brothers, Roland Maw, Kasilof; Robert Maw, Pinedale, Wyo., and sisters, Suezun Hilburn, St. George, Utah, and Janet Engelke, Hooper, Utah.

Funeral services will be held Friday, July 16, with viewing at 11 a.m. and services at noon, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 901 Bogard Road, Wasilla, Alaska.

Burial will be on Saturday at 2 p.m., at the Kenai Alaska Cemetery.
