Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Longtime Sunshine resident James Edward "Jim" Shade, 79, died at his home Oct. 21, 2004, surrounded by his family.
At his request, he will be cremated and no services will be held. His remains will be scattered on his homestead.
Mr. Shade was born Aug. 24, 1925, in Brackenridge, Pa. He lived there until moving with his wife to Alaska in 1950. During World War II, Mr. Shade served as a Marine in the South Pacific.
He and his wife, Catherine, homesteaded in Sunshine in 1959.
He enjoyed cooking, fishing, woodworking, Native art and traveling in Alaska. He was a member of Ironworkers Local #751 for 33 years, a member of VFW Myron F. "Ace" Ebling Memorial Post #3836 in Talkeetna, a lifetime member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry and founding member of the Upper Susitna Seniors Inc.
Mr. Shade is survived by his wife of 57 years, Catherine; daughter, Kathy Nelson of Anchorage; daughter and son-in-law, Doralynn and George Issel of Sunshine; grandchildren, James R. Shade, Samantha Issel of Sunshine, Diana Shade, Sara Nelson and Jesse Adams of Wasilla; a sister, Viola Shade of Mobile, Ala., and many nieces and nephews in the Lower 48.
His family suggests that memorial donations be sent to Upper Susitna Seniors Inc., HC89, Box 592, Willow, AK 99688 or to VFW Post #3836 Building Fund, P.O. Box 268, Talkeetna, AK 99676.
Arrangements were with Valley Funeral Home & Crematory in Wasilla.
