Jay “Don” Donald Chambers of Palmer, 88, went home to be with God on March 18, 2010, in Anchorage.
Don was born in Pennsylvania in 1921 and moved to Detroit, where he became a journeyman upholsterer. He moved to Alaska in 1944 and was drafted by the armed forces, where he served until 1946. Don had many interests over the years, including prospecting much of Southcentral, a scrap metal business and an upholstery business he ran until 1995.
Don was always available for a friend in need and was truly generous. He was eager to share a good laugh, a cup of coffee and was deeply devoted to his family of cats. His in-depth knowledge of gold mining, metals, his varied adventures in Alaska and his sense of humor combined to make him a wonderful storyteller. He accepted Jesus as his personal Savior in March 2009. Don is survived by a son, Gene Gjertson of Anchorage, and a sister, Grace Heatley of Sevierville, Tenn.
At his request, Don was cremated and his ashes will be spread at the cabin site on Lazy Mountain in a private ceremony. Don is and will continue to be missed by those who loved him.
