JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska – The Exchange at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson hosted an Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month Artifact Showcase May 21, to recognize the history and culture of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

The event showcased two hand-sewn dresses, called baro’t-saya and often worn by Fillipino women for celebrations, and a hand-sewn dress shirt, called barong and traditionally worn by Fillipino men. Both of these national dresses are typically made from piña fabric, which is made from pineapple leaves. Additionally, the display also included infographics that detailed the rich history, culture, leadership, and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to the United States and its military.

“It is a way to connect with and engage in the community in understanding and sharing our diverse cultures,” said Nina Needham, 673d Force Support Squadron assistant director of Non-Appropriated Funds and Human Resources. "When we appreciate and celebrate differences, we help create a culture of diversity and inclusion where everyone feels a sense of belonging and benefits from a safe, healthy, and positive living and working environment.”

The Asian Americans representing AAPI Heritage Month at the event were employees at The Exchange and wore traditional dresses passed down from their families in place of their usual work uniforms.

“People look at it and see what a Filipino dress looks like, and they seem excited," said Cecille Eaker, The Exchange Jewelry Department area manager. "People took pictures and asked us about our dresses."

Despite this event being focused on Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage, it plays a crucial role in starting the conversation about diversity and ultimately accepting the vast number of cultures and backgrounds that the United States and military consist of.
