Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Butte resident Jean A. Smart, 74, died peacefully in her sleep Dec. 14, 2002, with her husband and daughters at her side. A celebration of life will be held Dec. 21 at 2 p.m. at the American Legion Post 15, Outer Springer Loop, Palmer, with Father George Beacom officiating. A reception will follow.
Mrs. Smart was born July 17, 1928, in Clark County, S.D. She arrived in Alaska in 1951. She survived the earthquake of 1964 in Valdez, in which she lost her first husband Ross McCoy. She married Gary (Red) Smart in 1967.
Mrs. Smart was a member of Pioneers of Alaska, The Palmer Elks, Palmer Moose Lodge and Academy of Friendship and The American Legion Auxiliary of Post 15. She was as active as she could be in all organizations and was the co-founder of the Palmer Dart League in 1981 and its president in 1981-1982.
Her family wrote, " She was a very loving and strong person who lived life through many adversities."
She is survived by her husband Red; son Rudy Svien; daughters Sandee Chapman and Rossane Antilla; granddaughter Kayla Jean Antilla; grandson Nathan Ross Antilla; stepchildren Robb, Renee, Todd, Timm and Keith Smart and their children; brothers Leon Barrie Jr., Darwin Barrie and Darrell Barrie; sisters JoAnn Jones, Ardis Oberin and sister-in-law Katherine Barrie and their families; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and a world of friends.
Her ashes will be placed beside her mother in Marysville, Wash. at a later date. The family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice.
