Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Delta Junction resident Jerry Harold Schneider, 63, died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, of cancer, at the Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Schneider was born April 22, 1938, in Canton, Ohio, where he was raised and graduated from Lehrman High School. Shortly thereafter, he furthered his education by attending the DeVry Technical Institute of Chicago.
He worked as an electronic technician and mechanic for farming equipment. He had been employed with Goodyear Aero-Space and Babcocks & Wilcox Research Center and most recently as a Christian volunteer at the New Hope Community Church in Delta Junction, where he had been a member for the last 17 years.
He moved to Palmer in 1976, where he lived until 1984, when he moved to Delta Junction to make it his home. Mr. Schneider was a trumpet player, he loved people, he loved to sing and enjoyed fishing, bowling and history.
His family wrote: "The family, friends and neighbors whose lives he touched will long remember Jerry's quiet strength and dedication to his family and to his Lord. The inspiration of his selfless love, tireless labor and wise counsel will remain a living legacy to bless all who were honored to know a man who lived his principles for God, and whose example shined as a light his passing could not extinguish."
Mr. Schneider was preceded in dead by his father, Harold Adolf Schneider, and mother, Mary Katherine Schneider. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Barbara Schneider; sister, Barbara Gallo of Canton, Ohio; five children, Debrah Osgood of Chugiak, Jeri Steiner of Eagle River, Stephen Schneider of Fort St. John, British Columbia, Joanna Wiggins of Delta Junction and David Schneider of Delta Junction; 12 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Memorial services will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Delta Christian Center in Delta Junction. A reception will be held immediately following the services. Inurnment will be in the Rest Haven Cemetery in Delta Junction.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jerry Schneider's name to the New Hope community church, HC 60, Box 4190, Delta Junction, AK 99737.
Arrangements were made by the Fairbanks Funeral Home and Crematory.
