Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Joan Alline Cunningham Hines, 57, died Sept. 28, 2003, at Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage, from cardiac arrest. Services were held Sept. 30 at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Wasilla with Rt. Rev. Wesley Izer of St. Nicholas of Myra Byzantine Catholic Church officiating.
Mrs. Hines was born April 13, 1946, in El Paso, Texas. She attended university at Lorretto Heights College in Denver, Colo., and also attended the University of Texas-El Paso.
She made her home with her family in Wasilla in June 1982.
She was employed by General Communications Inc. (GCI) for the last 13 years as a conference operator. Prior to that, she managed a retail store, Pacific Fabrics, in their Wasilla Carrs Mall location.
She was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Byzantine Catholic Church (Mat-Su Outreach) and Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church (Wasilla).
Mrs. Hines enjoyed sewing, quilting and crafting along with gardening, navigating the Internet, and spending time with family and friends. She loved taking photographs of the people and things she loved.
Her family said, "Joan was known for her kindhearted spirit and smile that would light up a room. Joan had a sense of adventure that could not be surpassed. She loved to see new things, find new places and figure out how things worked. She enjoyed giving of herself however she could, no matter what. She enjoyed the company of her grandchildren very much."
Survivors include her husband William J. Hines Jr. of Wasilla; daughter and son-in-law Katherine "Kati" and Glenn Buckland of Albuquerque, N.M.; son William "Billy" J. Hines III and daughter-in-law Gerri "Clicker" Tokar-Hines of Wasilla; grandchildren Caleigh and Noah Mingo and Mason Buckland of Albuquerque and Liam Hines of Wasilla; mother Fran Cunningham; aunt Margaret Momsen; brothers Art and John Peter Cunningham, sisters Margaret Peggy Burgess of Phoenix, Ariz., Kay Magri of Glen Ellyn, Ill., and Uncle Gus Momsen of Deming, N.M., along with their families including many nieces and nephews in the southwest area.
Mrs. Hines was preceded in death by her father, Arthur Cunningham, her in-laws William and Leona Hines, and her sister-in-law Barbara King.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choosing or St. Nicholas of Myra Byzantine Catholic Church (Outreach) in her name, at 2200 Arctic Boulevard. Anchorage, AK 99503.
Her ashes will be scattered at a later date.
