Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Trapper Creek resident John Joseph High, 30, died Jan. 5, 2004, as the result of a Parks Highway moose collision, while driving home from work to his family.
A memorial service was held Jan. 10 at 2 p.m. at the Trapper Creek Community Center. A Celebration of Life gathering followed. His cremated remains will be scattered over the land he loved.
Mr. High was born April 3, 1973, in Tennessee. He was raised in Minnesota and in 1991 graduated from East High School in Duluth. He moved to Alaska in 1993, where he enjoyed many activities, especially dog mushing. He entered the construction industry and became a carpenter, working most recently for Jenson and Sons.
His family wrote, "John was a devoted family man, whose greatest joy was spending time with his wife and children. He loved working with his hands and was designing the dream house he planned to build. He also enjoyed sharing his love of outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing and snowboarding."
Mr. High is survived by his wife Heather and their two children Jacob, 3, and Molly, 6 months old. He is also survived by his mother Debra Ruby and her husband David of Duluth; his father Danny B. High and wife Janice of Soldotna; brothers, Jamie and wife Nicole and their three children of Cambridge, Minn., and Brent of Moundsview, Minn; grandmothers Lorraine Zelinsky and Margaret High, both of Brooklyn Center, Minn.; a large extended family and many friends.
