Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Willow resident John Robert "J.R." Wyrick, 50, died at his home on Nov. 18, 2004. A funeral service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday, at the Valley Church of Christ, on the Parks Highway in Wasilla.
Mr. Wyrick was born Jan. 29, 1954, in Thermopolis, Wyo. He moved with his family to Alaska in 1959. He graduated from Dimond High School in Anchorage and was a 34-year veteran of the #302 Operating Engineers.
Mr. Wyrick traveled and worked from Nome all the way to the Amchitka Islands and most places in between.
His family wrote, "J.R. loved Alaska, snowmachining, moving dirt and living his life close to his entire family."
He is survived by his two sons, Jason and Jeff Wyrick; two grandsons, Cameron and Cody Wyrick; parents, L.E. and Marilyn Wyrick and his three sisters, Susan Harding, Barbara Wyrick and Tracy Wyrick.
His longtime friend, Sharon Moore, and his former wife and the mother of his children, Ellen Morrison of Seattle, also survive him.
Arrangements were made by Valley Funeral Home & Crematory in Wasilla.
