Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Palmer resident John "Jack" VanCleve Horner, 80, died Jan. 6, 2005 at Valley Hospital in Palmer.
In lieu of a service, a celebration of life will be held from 1-4 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 23, at the Horner residence, 129 W. Caribou St., Palmer.
Mr. Horner was born in Oakland, Calif., on Oct. 15, 1924. He and his wife of 54 years, Janet, moved to Alaska in 1982. They lived in the South Fork Valley of Eagle River for many years before recently moving to Palmer.
He worked in the plumbing sales business in Anchorage for more than 20 years and had many close friends in the trade.
A hard-working man, Mr. Horner enjoyed the outdoors, camping, gold mining and using his chain saw.
In addition to his wife, Janet, Mr. Horner is survived by his children, Joanne Smith of Palmer, Cliff Horner of Colorado and Karl and Chris Cotterall Horner of Palmer; grandchildren, Kelli Smith of Palmer, Kaycee and Jonny Hammond of Peters Creek and other family members, Barbara and Ken Wardrip of San Jose, Calif.
