Alaskan pioneer Jule “Jay” Nolfi, 95, passed away on March 27, 2018 at Primrose Retirement Community in Wasilla, Alaska. Jay was born in Nanticoke, PA, May 19, 1922 to Helen and Onofer Sedor, the 11th of 12 children.
She married Adrian “Ed” Nolfi on January 16, 1947 in New York City. They drove to Alaska later that month via the Alcan Highway, where they made Alaska their home. Immediately upon her arrival in Alaska, Jay went to work for the Department of Taxation in Anchorage. In 1953 she began visiting the Big Lake area where she eventually homesteaded with her family in 1959. Jay worked for the Anchorage Borough School District for over 20 years, where she was instrumental in forming the “Totem Association”, a support staff bargaining unit. Jay was an active member of the community her entire life. She was a past secretary for Pioneers of Alaska. Jay was a Mat-Su Borough Assembly Member for two terms, 1986-1991 and was Secretary and President of the Big Lake Community Council and the Big Lake Chamber of Commerce. She was on the Mat-Su Borough Assembly Committee on policies and procedures. Jay was also a member and chair of the Mat-Su Borough Board of Ethics and was instrumental in developing the Borough ethics code. She was involved in the passage of the bonds for construction of the deep draft dock at Port Mackenzie and served as a member of the Port Commission. Her son, Adrian Peter Nolfi of Anchorage, Daughter, Nancy Nolfi-Dodge of Big Lake, grandson Peter Nicholas Nolfi of Big Lake, granddaughter Austin Crossman of Washington, great grandson Jason Luke Crossman of Washington, and a myriad of loving, extended family and friends survive Mrs. Nolfi. Her husband, Adrian “Ed” Nolfi, grandson Adrian Luke Nolfi, her parents, and 11 siblings from the Sedor family preceded her in death. A service will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Bogard Road in Wasilla, Alaska, May 4, at 11:00 a.m. A reception will immediately follow at the church. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to enhance the Jay Nolfi Fish Creek Park in Big Lake, Alaska. Checks may be made out and mailed to The Big Lake Lions Foundation, P.O.
