PALMER — Colony’s top jumper helped the Knights leap past the defending conference champions.

Colony senior Brandon Nicholson scored three wins to lead the Knights to the boys’ team title during the Kenai Invitational last weekend at Kenai Central High School.

Nicholson, the defending 4A state champion in the boys’ triple jump, finished first in the triple jump, long jump and high jump during the Kenai meet. Nicholson’s mark of 21 feet, 10 inches in the long jump is a personal record. With Nicholson’s wins, Colony finished with 105 total points in the team standings, about a dozen ahead of runner-up Kodiak, the defending Northern Lights Conference champs.

Palmer finished fourth in the boys’ team standings with 88 points and Wasilla was sixth with 53. Larry Cutsforth led the Moose with a first-place finish in the 400 meters. Cutsforth also teamed with Matthew Daniels, Nick Johnson and Chance Tucker in Palmer’s win in the 800-meter relay.

Coleen Geraghty scored an individual and relay win to help Colony finish third in the girls’ standings with 86 points. Geraghty was first in the 800. Geraghty, Jill Bowker, Alyssa Miles and Cathelyne Powers won the 3,200 relay for the Knights.

Colony finished three points ahead of fourth-place Palmer in the team standings. Madi Ko factored into a pair of wins for the Moose. Ko used a personal record of 34-3 to win the triple jump. She also joined Ruby Woodings, Zoe Copp and Shayna Madruga in a victory in the 400 relay.

Defending state champion Ceil Dunleavy led the Wasilla girls with a victory in the high jump. Dunleavy hit 5-5 to win the event.
