Jumpers help Knights finish 1st, 2nd in team standings at Palmer Invite

PALMER — With Wasilla’s Ceil Dunleavy and a heavy dose of the Colony Knights, Valley girls dominated the jumps during the Palmer Invitational at Palmer High School.

Dunleavy, the two-time defending state champion in the high jump, won the event for the fourth time this season. She also matched a career high, with a mark of 5 feet, 6 inches. Colony senior Chase Stephens finished second in the event, with a leap of 5-4, but won two other events. Stephens won the long jump and triple jump events. She hit 17-4 in the long and 35-6 in the triple.

Dunleavy also used a career-best of 33-5 to finish third in the triple jump.

Colony’s Madeline Ko recorded runner-u finishes in both the long and triple jumps. Colony’s Lily Sessom was fourth in both the high jump and long jump. Colony’s Anna Condio was third in the triple jump.

Valley athletes grabbed the top four spots in a three jump events.

Thanks to Brandon Nicholson Colony also ruled the boys’ jump. Nicholson swept the three events for the Knights. He hit 5-10 to win the high jump 19-11.75 in the long jump and 44-1.5 in the triple jump.

Led by their jumpers, the Knights cruised to the team titles in the girls’ class and finished second in the boys' standings. Colony collected 258 total points on the girls’ side, finishing more than 100 points ahead of runner-up Anchorage Christian. Palmer won the boys' team titles with 125 points, and Colony was second at 118.

Kristian Tennesen also won the girls’ discus for the Knights. Dakota Peterson-Thompson won the boys’ 3,200 for the Knights. Brady Southwick led Palmer with a victory in the boys’ 300 hurdles.
