JUNEAU - The Palmer Moose opened their 1999 football season by falling 28-0 Friday to Juneau-Douglas High School.
The Moose traveled to Juneau for the game, and the road trip that is really an air trip took its toll on the Moose.
Juneau senior Ryan Wilson did not exactly roll out the red carpet for the visiting Moose.
Wilson ran for 224 yards, as Juneau relied on a strong ground game to wear down the Palmer defense.
Wilson carried the ball 17 times and scored two touchdowns.
He got into the end zone once in the first quarter on a 6-yard run and then capped Juneaus scoring with a 50-yard run late in the fourth quarter.
The Moose fell to Juneau last year at Palmer High School, and this year they traveled to Juneau as part of a two-year, home-and-home agreement.
Prior to the game, Palmer head coach Rod Christiansen said he hoped the long trip would give his young squad a chance to grow as a team because of the length of the trip.
Palmer returns to the Valley to play Homer in the first Northern Lights Conference game of the season Saturday.
Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Machetanz Field on the campus of PHS.
