Junior hockey: Avs sit alone in first place

PALMER — The Alaska Avalanche sit alone at the top of the North American Hockey League West Division standings thanks in part to a 5-1 win over the Fairbanks Ice Dogs at the MTA Palmer Ice Arena Friday night.

That victory, coupled with Kenai River's 5-4 win over Wenatchee Friday, allowed the Avs to separate themselves from a three-way tie that had included Fairbanks and Wenatchee. The three teams skated into play Friday tied with 26 points in the standings.

Alaska captain Zack Smith scored twice, and rookie goaltender Blake Mendenhall enjoyed the best night of his young junior career in net during the win. Blake Huppert, Brandon Brossoit and Jake Barber also scored for Alaska.
