Just a thought -- Magner Field? That has a ring to it, don't ya think?
We have Machetanz Field at Palmer High School, Veterans Memorial Field at Wasilla High School -- so it may be about time to give Colony High School's football field an official name.
The school and field is about 13 years old. Seems appropriate to start naming some of the facilities.
And if it is time to stamp the field at CHS with a title, who better to recognize than a person who helped put Colony football on the map?
Randy Magner.
When looking at the possibility of naming a facility, those involved mainly look at either a memorial tribute or honoring someone who's contributions have led to the success of those who regularly use that
facility.
The history of Knight football is young compared to Palmer or Wasilla, and with the thought of other programs in the state, such as the Warriors or the Moose, more names -- whether they be players, coaches or longtime supporters -- come to mind.
But when you think of Colony football, the name Magner comes to mind.
And his contributions to CHS go further than just football. While with CHS, Magner not only helped build a successful football program, but is known for helping his athletes find their way to camps outside Alaska, opportunities to continue in athletics after high school and earn college athletic scholarships. He runs an off-season conditioning and weight training program, not just for football players, and regularly helps out with other sports, such as track and field.
The name Magner coincides with Colony football and Colony athletics.
When you think CHS athletics and CHS football, you think of Magner. You think of Randy, who has been with CHS from the beginning and you think of athletes such as Leah, Cole and Rhett who have been leaders in their respective sports.
Magner Field… just a thought.
