Who is the Department of Environmental Conservation working for these days? Are they focusing their efforts on the health of our environment and the people who reside in Alaska, or on appeasing greedy politicians? It appears the latter is their interest.
Case in point, the Usibelli Coal Mine Inc. was issued an air quality permit, by our DEC, to build a coal handling and rock/crusher plant northeast of Palmer. This air quality permit was approved using particulate matter taken from Eagle River air samples and weather data from 1990.
It is unconscionable that this permit would be allowed without scientifically addressing the dynamics of the precise location of the coal mine and current weather data. For those of you living, recreating, or hunting in, the Valley be prepared to don a respirator as your body is enveloped in coal dust. Better yet, join Castle Mountain Coalition and/or Mat-Su Coalition and support their efforts to keep our Valley a healthy place for living and recreating. We can stop negative impacts on our communities if we stand strong together!
