Is there something stopping you from realizing your vision?
I was taught years ago by my stepfather that setting goals and attaining those goals is one very important component in becoming a successful person.
In 1991 I took over a Houston hockey program that was full of doubts and uncertainty.
I would love to take credit for the recent success of building a competitive program, but this has been a collaborative effort from parents, community, youth coaches and dedicated young men and women who have bought into not only a hockey program, but a life education program that consists of integrity, character and discipline.
We have a parent meeting at the beginning of the year to go over rules, expectations and the all-important communication tree.
I tell parents that our coaching staff will probably spend more time with their kids over the next four months than they will.
It is essential that, as a coach, you develop a working relationship with the athlete, student and, in the end, friend.
As a coach your vision needs to be your team's vision. Just think if you have 20 players, 40 parents, school personnel, and a solid coaching staff that is trying to attain one goal.
The year 2000-2001 was an attainable goal that Houston hockey has had for 10 years.
I still have to pinch myself when I reflect back on such a magical season -- state champions with a record of 20 wins and only four defeats.
I do remember the zero wins and 22 loss season and how the doubts and uncertainty can rob your ability to lead, accomplish and inspire.
My advice to my players is to keep in sight your vision and purpose and take small successful steps to the top.
