Kenai Central, Soldotna top Wasilla volleyball

KENAI — The host Kenai Central volleyball team swept Wasilla 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 26-24) on Friday in Northern Lights Conference action.

“It was our first conference win in I don’t know how long,” Kenai Central head coach Tracie Beck said. “It was a great team effort, fantastic. They did amazing.”

Kiana Harding had seven kills, five stuff blocks and an ace, while Justice English had nine kills for Kenai Central. Abby Beck had three aces and also led the team in assists.

The Kards lost in three games to Palmer on Saturday and are now 1-6 in the league, 2-8 overall.

Stars split conference matches

The host Soldotna volleyball team was swept by Palmer on Friday before beating Wasilla in three games Saturday.

The matches moved the Stars to 4-5 in the Northern Lights Conference.

Soldotna head coach Emily Kenagy said the loss to the Moose was not pretty.

“We just didn’t play as a team,” Kenagy said. “We weren’t ready to play. They adjusted well to what we were doing, and we didn’t adjust to what they were doing.”

Things went much better Saturday against Wasilla.

“It was a team effort,” Kenagy said. “The starters played in the first game, but after that we switched it up a bit.”

In the third game, the Stars inserted JV setter Lindsey Wong for Julie Litchfield and still came away with the victory.

Skyview sweeps in Cordova

The visiting Panthers notched three-game sweeps in Cordova on Friday and Saturday to move to 7-0 in the Southcentral Conference and 8-0 overall.

Skyview took Friday’s conference match 25-11, 26-24 and 25-11. Cheyanne Laber had 17 kills, while Sam Reynolds had six kills, Hayley Ramsell had five kills and Cat Schoessler had three kills. Casey Neill had 21 digs, while Emily DiPaulo had 22 assists.

Saturday, Skyview won 28-26, 25-9 and 25-11. Laber had 11 kills, Reynolds had 10 kills, Ramsell had nine kills and Schoessler had eight kills. Neill had 22 digs, while DiPaulo tallied 24 assists.

“Casey Neill was very consistent defensively,” Skyview head coach Sheila Kupferschmid said. “She passed the ball very well again. She’s such a leader in the back row. She’s a big part of our offense.”

Seward, Homer compete at Lady Grizzly Invitational

Homer finished seventh in the Lady Grizzly Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Anchorage, while Seward was ninth.

In Friday pool play, Homer was 3-7 while Seward was 5-5. Seward and Homer played in the first round of the tournament, with Homer winning 2-1.

The Mariners then lost 2-0 to Kodiak before beating Houston 2-1 and losing to Valdez 2-0. Seward lost to Monroe Catholic 2-1 in the consolation bracket.
