King salmon fishing on Little Su will close

PALMER — It’s another short king salmon fishing season on the Little Susitna River.

As of 12:01 a.m. Friday, the popular Valley fishery will be closed to king salmon fishing for the remainder of the season, according to a press release issued by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game on Wednesday. The closure prohibits sport fishing for king salmon, including catch-and-release fishing. The release also states king salmon caught while fishing for other species my not be retained.

The closure includes all waters on the Little Su from its confluence with Cook Inlet upstream to the Parks Highway Bridge.

Fishing for other species is permitted.

According to the release, only 19 kings have passed through the Little Susitna weir, and about 200 harvested kings have been reported in an exit survey conducted by the Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation. The escapement goal for the Little Su is 900-1,800 kings.
