Knight girls split against region foes

PALMER -- Colony hit six three-pointers in the first half to help the Knights storm past the Kenai Kardinals 61-47 at Colony High School Saturday.

Sienna Locke and Kristina Klapperich each hit a three-pointer in the second quarter to break an 18-18 tie. The shots ignited a Colony run and helped the Knights break open the game.

Locke hit three three-pointers in the first quarter.

The Knights held a 36-20 advantage at the half.

"We have been known to get leads and relax," Colony head coach Don Witzel said. "We got off to a 10-point lead in the first and Kenai made a couple of runs. We hit a couple of big threes from the corner."

The second quarter proved to be the key for Colony. The Knights outscored the Kards 22-10 in the second quarter. Klapperich scored nine of her team-high 25 points in the second period.

Colony also held the Kardinals to just three field goals in the second quarter.

"We certainly played better defense," Witzel said. "We have not played really good defense until this weekend."

The Knights suffered a loss in the win. During the second half, forward Marge Morris went down with an ankle injury.

According to Witzel, Morris may be out one to two weeks. Witzel with look to a host of players' to fill the void left by Morris, including Jessica Dault.

Stars slip past Knights

The undefeated Soldotna Stars edged the Colony Knights 46-44 at Colony High School Saturday.

Rachel Bess led the Stars with a game-high 29 points.

Klapperich and Locke combined for 23 points in the loss to lead Colony.

The Stars jumped out to a 12-4 lead in the first quarter, but Colony outscored Soldotna 15-14 in the second to narrow the gap.
