Knights boys, girls bounce back with wins over Palmer

The Colony Knights were swept by one of their big rivals Saturday. A few days later, the Knights bounced back against their other major foe in a big way.

The Colony boys rode the three-pointer during a 72-34 win over Palmer. And the Knights girls shut down the Moose in a 55-6 victory.

The Colony boys knocked down 13 threes during the win. Five of those three-pointers came during a 23-8 first-quarter run. Leyton Lockard hit a trio of threes in the first and Mylz Mongeau added a pair. Lockard led Colony with five three-pointers. Mongeau added three, Nile DeLand had two, and Malik Balmes and Nick Bailey had one each.

Lockard led Colony with a game-high 19 points. Mongeau added 18.

The Knights held the Moose to only eight points in each of the first two quarters. Lukas Owens led Palmer with 14 points. Logan Rolston added 10.

Colony improved to 1-1 in Northern Lights Conference play. The Knights suffered a loss to rival Wasilla Jan. 11 at WHS.

Palmer’s loss marked its first of the season. The Moose had won six straight games.

The Colony girls also bounced back from a loss to Wasilla with the lopsided win over Palmer. The Moose were held to only two field goals and a pair of free throws in 32 minutes of play.

Colony senior Hallie Clark, the reigning 4A girls player of the year, led the Knights with 17 points. Clark, who did not play in the fourth quarter, scored seven during Colony’s 24-2 first-quarter run. Ally Shelley added 10 in the win.

In other action, in a battle of defending state champs, the Wasilla girls beat Grace Christian 50-42 in Anchorage. Grace, the defending 3A boys state champions, outlasted the Warriors 71-67.
