Knights cap West tourney with win over Kodiak

ANCHORAGE — The Colony Knights boys basketball squad rebounded from a pair of losses and grabbed a 50-26 win over Kodiak during the final day of the Alaska Airlines Classic, Saturday in Anchorage.

The Knights, who suffered consecutive losses to teams from outside Alaska during the first two days of the tournament, used an early run to get the win over Kodiak, a Northern Lights Conference rival. Colony outscored Kodiak 15-4 in the first quarter, and led 25-12 at the half.

Anton Chamblee shot 6 of 7 from the floor, and led the Knights with 13 points. Graham Dinkel and Chance Lincoln scored 11 each.

The win followed losses to teams from Florida and Georgia.

Friday, East Hall of Gainsville, Georgia, edged Colony 60-58 in the consolation semifinals. East Hall used a 20-14 run to take a halftime lead, but Colony climbed back into the contest with a 36-point second half.

Bailey West hit four three-pointers and scored a team-high 16 points for the Knights. Robert Sonnenberg added 13.

Chamblee hit a trio of three-pointers, and scored 10. West and Chamblee were a combined 7 of 12 from beyond the arc.

Jacquen Hopkins led East Hall with a game-high 19 points.

East Hall won its region last year, and advanced to Georgia’s Class 3A state tournament. East Hall is no stranger to this tournament, winning the Alaska Airlines Classic in 2012.

Thursday, Windermere Prep of Windermere, Florida, used a big third quarter to move past the Knights 72-47 in the first round. Windermere outscored Colony 20-9 in the third.

West finished 4 of 7 from beyond the arc and scored a team-high 12 for Colony. Lincoln and Dinkel added seven each.

Parker Davis led Windermere with 20. Isaiah Curry added 14 and Xeo Golding chipped in 13.

Windermere, which includes four college-bound seniors, finished 20-8 last year, won its district and advanced to the Florida Class 3A state tournament.

Colony, which finished third in the Alaska 4A state tournament last year, finished 1-2 in the tourney and is now 7-5 overall.

Three games in the Alaska Airlines Classic are part of a very busy month of January for the Knights. Colony started its month in the Mt. McKinley Bank Holiday Classic, and finished second in the tournament at Monroe Catholic in Fairbanks. The Knights opened NLC play with a win over Palmer last week. The Knights have five more conference games this month, a stretch that includes road trips to Kodiak and the Kenai Peninsula, and a game at Wasilla.
