Knights celebrate fall sports participants

Picture pudding flying through the air as eight students frantically scramble to dig out items such as a Speedo, sweatband, and spandex with only their mouths -- that was the scene at the Colony High School Fall Sports Assembly on Oct. 16.

The assembly honored all 199 athletes participating in football, volleyball, cross country, swimming and cheerleading. The Student Government Executive Board, which plans the school assemblies, gave recognition to the sports members for their achievements.

Colony High cheerleaders performed their outstanding state routine for the enthusiastic crowd, and the student body roared in approval at participants in the Pudding Game, the four-way Tug-o-War, and the Chubby Bunny, a marshmallow game where the student with the most marshmallows in his mouth win.

The highlight of the games was the dance competition between four participants from cross-country, volleyball, swimming and football. The cheerleaders had about 16 minutes to teach a dance to the competitors.

Lindsey Heiserman, a senior, voiced her excitement, "athlete participation was great. There was so much school spirit. And Ross [Wise] is an awesome dancer!"

The spirit games counted for Colony Cup points. Last year the Colony Cup tradition was started by student government to increase student spirit. For each sport/club, the leadership class designates one activity to be a Colony Cup event. Student attendance at each event is counted when the students sign up at the event with a Leadership class member.

The class (freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors) with the most students signed up is awarded five points, the second class four, and so on.

The cheerleading coach, Kristy Johnston, said, "Student behavior was outstanding; there was a lot of class participation and spirit and the dance competition is a must next year."

Even though assembly time cuts into instruction time, assemblies play a key role in developing healthy competition between classes, establishing unity within the school and recognizing achievements of students.
