Knights dual in Oregon tourney

PALMER — The Colony Knights wrestling team has created a holiday tradition, making another trip to the Northwest Duals tournament in Beaverton, Ore.

The Knights also spent part of their holiday break showing the Alaska wrestling power can contend with some of the top programs the state of Oregon has to offer. The Knights were 6-2 in eight duals during the two-day event hosted by Westview High School in Beaverton, and finished as the runner-up in the tournament’s second bracket.

The Knights finished third in the championship bracket last year.

Colony head coach Todd Hopkins said traveling to the duals meet provides a great opportunity for his athletes.

“You wrestle different kids from different schools, different styles, it keeps you fresh mentally,” Hopkins said by cellphone from Oregon on Monday.

Events such as the Reno Tournament of Champions has been a popular destination for Alaska teams and athletes. But with the Reno tournament’s standard bracket, wrestlers are only guaranteed two matches. Hopkins said he would prefer to bring his team to a tournament such as the Northwest Duals, which can offer his athletes many more matches.

“You look at the numbers, and a lot of Alaska kids went two-and-out,” Hopkins said of the Reno tournament. “Here, we can get kids seven, maybe eight matches. You get a lot of good matches.”

Colony beat five schools from Oregon and one from Washington during the tournament, which ended Tuesday. Monday during pool-play action, the Knights finished 5-1. Colony beat Beaverton (Ore.) 48-24, Snohomish (Wash) 58-18, Centennial (Ore.) 31-28, Glencoe (Ore.) 37-24 and St. Helens (Ore.) 53-6 during the first day.

The lone loss was a 31-27 defeat to Churchill High, which is currently ranked second in Oregon’s 5A class.

The 5-1 pool-play mark placed Colony in the tournament’s No. 2 bracket. The Knights beat Sweet Home (Ore.) 39-33 in the bracket semifinals, but suffered a 54-15 loss to Sunset (Ore.) in the finals. Sunset High is in Oregon’s 6A class.

Hopkins said the big difference between last year’s third-place finish and this year was Colony was forfeiting four weight classes per dual. But each of the 10 wrestlers Colony brought to the tournament finished with a winning record in the duals tourney. Sam Sisco finished 7-0 in the tournament. Dawson Nash and Jordan Nero were each 6-1. Zach Doan and Mitchell Daigle were 6-1, while Chace Booth and Caleb Hopkins finished 6-2.

Sisco and Robert Haan had five pins each for the Knights.
