WASILLA — A Colony relay team made a statement, and another Knights athlete finished as the runner-up in a signature event during the Big C Relays in Anchorage.
The Colony boys’ 400-meter relay team highlighted the first day of the two-day meet at The Dome in Anchorage, winning the event with a time of 44.82 seconds. Steven Bilafer, Hunter Harwood, Jon Pomrenke and Zane Vrvilo combined to post a faster than the 45.24 mark Palmer used to win the Region III title in the 400 relay last spring.
Colony’s Melvin Charles-White finished second in the Boys Alaska Airlines Pentathlon, a sponsored and signature event of the annual Big C Relays. Charles-White was among a half-dozen boys nominated to participate in the competition which includes the high jump, shot put, 100 meters, 300-meter hurdles and 800. Among the highlights for Charles-White was a first-place finish in the 300 hurdles.
Two other Knights earned individual titles. Brandon Nicholson, the defending 4A state champion in the triple jump, won the long jump competition with a leap of 20 feet, 7.75 inches. Nicholson jumped four inches farther than Eielson’s Antonio Giffith.
Colony’s Kristina Tennesen won the girls’ discus, with a throw of 111 feet, 9 inches. Her toss was 10 feet longer than runner-up Amir Williams of Anchorage Christian.
Nicholson also finished second in the boys’ high jump.
Tyler Spatz led Palmer with a runner-up finish in the boys’ 400. Ruby Woodings placed third for the Moose in the girls’ 400.
Quincy Fuller led Wasilla with a fourth-place finish in the boys’ 800. Wasilla’s Chantel LeBon was part of a five-way tie for fourth, with a mark of 4-8 in the girls’ high jump.
The first local prep track and field meet of the season, the Valley Quad, is slated for April 16 at Wasilla High School.
