Las Vegas, Nev. — The Colony Knights girls basketball team dominated Foothills High School 53-26 Monday in Las Vegas in an environment that more closely resembled Alaska rather than the desert.
The game started at 8 a.m. and coach Don Witzel said that Vegas was experiencing a winter storm that the rest of the country has been getting pounded with.
“This morning there was still a lot of snow on the ground,” he said after the Knights blowout win. “It definitely wasn’t what we had expected.”
Alex Coon lead the Knights with 19 points, setting up a match up later in the day with Monte Vista High School of Danville, Calif., in the semifinals of the Lady Wolves Invite.
“We started slow,” Witzel said. “We kicked it in in the second half, though. We really stepped up our defense.”
As for the temperature, Witzel said it had started to warm up.
“I’m actually wearing shorts now,” Witzel said by phone. “It’s quite nice.”
In the semifinal action of the Lady Wolves tournament, the Colony girls lost to Monte Vista 48-30. Witzel said the Monte Vista team had a distinct size advantage and that Colony made too many turnovers.
Coon lead the Knights again with 14 points. Colony will play for third place today at 8:30 a.m. Alaska time.
