Knights finish first in maroon bracket of Lady Lynx Shootout; Moose third

ANCHORAGE — The Colony Knights didn’t have a scorer in double digits, but built a first-half lead and survived a defensive battle to beat Kenai 32-29 during the final day of the Lady Lynx Prep Shootout in Anchorage Saturday.

With the win, Colony finished first in the maroon bracket of the 16-team tournament hosted annually by Dimond High. Colony scored 22 of its 32 points in the first half against its Northern Lights Conference rival.

Chase Stephens was a perfect 4 for 4 from the free throw line and led Colony with eight points. She also grabbed a team-high five rebounds.

Kenai’s Hannah Barcus led all scorers with 10 points.

Colony jumped into maroon bracket championship game with a 44-34 win over Juneau-Douglas in the semifinals Friday. Jennifer Solano led the Knights with 14 points and six rebounds. Faith Farris added 10 points.

Colony used a 9-3 second-quarter run to early an early deficit.

Palmer finished third in the maroon bracket with a 42-34 win over Juneau. Leya DePriest supplied game-highs in points (17) and rebounds (13) to help Palmer post the victory. Carly Venzke added 10 points and three steals.

Palmer held Juneau to 29 percent shooting.

NLC rival Kenai got by Palmer 36-27 in the maroon bracket semifinals.

Palmer managed only five first-half points, two in the second quarter, and trailed 16-5 at halftime. Neither team shot better than 23 percent from the field.

DePriest and Venzke scored 10 points each for the Moose.

Wasilla, the lone Valley team playing in the event’s gold bracket, had to settle for sixth following a 40-34 loss to West Valley. The Wollfpack, led by Ruthy Hebard’s game-high 17 rebounds, outrebounded Wasilla 39-21. Hebard also had a game-high 15 points.

Amanda Hutchins led Wasilla with 11 points. McKenna Dinkel added six points and six rebounds.

Wasilla earned a 35-32 win over NLC rival Soldotna during gold bracket action on Friday. Dinkel scored 15 points to help Wasilla beat Soldotna for the first time this season. It was the third meeting of the year between the teams.

Hutchins added nine points for Wasilla.
