PALMER — Colony senior Chase Stephens used a career weekend to help the Colony Knights cruise to the girls’ team title at the Colony Invitational in Palmer
Stephens set career highs in the triple jump, long jump and 100-meter hurdles during the two-day track and field meet at Colony High. Stephens hit 35 feet, 11.5 inches in the triple jump, more than a foot better than her prior season best. She also topped the 35-foot mark for the second time in her prep career. Stephens landed a jump of 17-4.25 in the long jump, another career best. Her third personal record came in the 100 hurdles, a mark of 13.07 seconds.
Stephens helped Colony finish with 144 total points in the team standings, well ahead of runner-up Homer’s 87.
Colony junior Kristina Tennesen also set a career best at the meet, hitting 126-6 in the discus. Tennesen has won the girls’ discus in all five meets she’s entered this year.
The Colony girls also won the 3,200-meter relay.
Madeline Ko finished second in a trio of events for the Knights, placing as the runner-up to Stephens in the long jump and triple jump. She was also second in the 300 hurdles. Ko was also third in the high jump.
Two-time defending state champion Ceil Dunleavy led the Wasilla Warriors with a win in the girls’ high jump. Dunleavy, who won the 4A girls’ high jump at the state meet as both a freshman and sophomore, hit 5-5 at the Colony Invite. Wasilla sophomore Chantel LeBon placed second in the high jump, with a mark of 4-10. Wasilla’s Kaylyn Kelly was third in the 200.
Alison VanPelt led the Houston Hawks with third-place finishes in the 800 and 3,200, and a fourth-place finish in the 1,600.
Host Colony placed second in the boys’ team standings with 131 points, finishing nine points shy of first-place Kodiak.
Junior Brandon Nicholson continued his tear, winning three events in a meet for the third time this season. Nicholson was first in the high jump, long jump and triple jump. The junior hit a career best in the long jump, with a mark of 21-3.5. He won the high jump with a season-best 6-2, and the triple jump with a leap of 45-2.25.
