WASILLA — When it comes to clutch play in the Menard Tournament, nobody’s been better in the last two years than Anthony Kolendo.
Kolendo, who scored the overtime goal in Colony’s 7-6 upset of East Anchorage during the tournament last year, buried the game-clinching shootout tally to lead the Knights to a 4-3 shootout victory over rival Wasilla during the second day of the Curtis C. Menard II Memorial Hockey Tournament at the Curtis C. Menard Memorial Ice Arena in Wasilla.
In evening action, Palmer defenseman Brennan Harrison notched the hat trick to lead Palmer to a 4-1 lead over Houston in the Menard semifinals. Blake Brazil also scored to help Palmer skate into a Menard title match with Lathrop, which beat Alaska power Service 3-2 on Friday. Lane Styers scored for the Hawks.
In the Knights' win, Alex Svoboda, Kevin Hartley and Morgan McJimsey each scored during the first two periods to help Colony earn the win and skate into Saturday’s fourth-place match against West Anchorage.
West moved forward with a 7-0 win over the Colony JV.
Colony skated the three-goal lead with the Svoboda, Hartley and McJimsey scores, but Wasilla scored three times in the third to tie the score.
Wasilla’s all-freshman line combined for a power-play tally early in the third period. Adam Apangolook scored with the advantage less than three minutes into the third to put the Warriors on the board. Teegan Harrington and Colton Fletcher set up the play.
Wasilla needed less than a minute to score again with the advantage. Senior captain Chancie Hanson scored another power-play goal, 38 seconds after Apangolook.
Sophomore Cooper Hanson tied the score at 3 with 3:35 left.
Wasilla outshot Colony 16-4 in the third and 49-33 in the game.
Colony senior Forrest Savel made 46 saves in the Colony win.
After a scoreless overtime, Colony edged Wasilla in the shootout. Each team used five shooters in the tiebreaker. McJimsey, Colony’s second shooter, found the back of the net to give the Knights the lead in overtime, but Wasilla’s third shooter — Chancie Hanson — scored to prolong the shootout.
Kolendo, Colony’s fifth and final shooter, scored to give Colony the win.
Wasilla will now face the Colony JV Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in the seventh-place game. The Colony varsity plays West Anchorage for fourth at 2:45 p.m.
