ANCHORAGE — Last season, as a sophomore at Wasilla High School, Peggy Mathis won three individual state track titles. That’s a tough feat to top.
Saturday, Mathis not only bettered her 2013 effort, but she also helped her new team, the Colony Knights, make school history.
Mathis, a Colony High junior, won four individual events and led the Knights to their first girls’ team title in school history during the final day of the 2014 ASAA/First National Bank State Track and Field Championships at Dimond High School in Anchorage.
“I’m really excited to know after all the training, I’m able to come out on top. It’s a good feeling,” Mathis said after winning the 400 meters, her fourth event of the day Saturday. “I think I could run another one.”
The goal all along was for Mathis to net the rare four-event sweep at the state meet. She’s the first Colony athlete in school history to boast four state titles in one meet. Rather than thinking about what could go wrong, Mathis said she focused on the goal itself.
“Anything could happen — a messed up start, not leaning far enough ¬— anything could go wrong,” Mathis said. “It’s the end of the season, so I wanted to give it my best and not slow down.”
After winning her final event of the day, Mathis said the reality of her accomplishment had not quite set in yet.
“It’s definitely something I thought about at the beginning, but never could piece it together until now. It still hasn’t registered,” Mathis said.
Mathis entered the 2014 meet as the defending state champion in the 100, 200 and 400. She repeated as champion in all three sprint events.
In the 100, Mathis set a personal record with a time of 12.54 seconds in the preliminary round. She won the 100-meter title, with a time of 12.70 in the finals. Mathis also registered a personal record in the 200-meter final, with a time of 25.36. She used a time of 58.56 to win the 400.
Mathis became the first runner since Wasilla’s Dajanae Harris (2010 and 2011) to repeat in the 100; the first since Bartlett’s Andrea Crook (2006 and 2007) to repeat in the 200; and the first since Wasilla’s Morgan Dampier (2011 and 2012) to repeat in the 400.
The wild card of her four events was the long jump. She competed in only running events during her first two years of high school. As a junior at CHS, she decided to give the long jump a try. The Colony coaching staff was excited about her potential, and encouraged her to continue.
Last week at the Region III Championships at Palmer High, Mathis finished second in the event. Saturday, Mathis jumped a personal best of 17 feet and 2.5 inches, and won 4A long jump gold.
“It was my second-to-last jump, and I was just thinking that this is it. I have to go now, so I was able to go from ranked second in my event to being up at the top,” Mathis said.
Mathis earned 40 total points for the Knights, helping Colony win its first girls state track and field team title. The Knights finished with 61 total points in the team standings. Chugiak and Thunder Mountian finished tied second with 52 points and Soldotna was third with 45.
The top nine teams in the standings were separated by only 21 points. Twelve points separated spots two through nine. A mere five points separated spots four through nine.
The Knights had been girls runners-up three times, finishing second in 1998, 2000 and 2001.
Chase Stephens also helped Colony’s cause, posting a pair of top-3 finishes for the Knights. Stephens was the runner-up on Friday in the triple jump, with a distance of 35-8.75. Saturday, Stephens hit a mark of 15-11.75 to finish third in the long jump. Anna Condio was fifth in the long jump for the Knights. Jacklyn Jaronik notched a fourth-place finish in the girls high jump.
Natalie Lautrup was fifth in the 300 hurdles. Cathelyne Powers finished eighth in the 3,200 meters for the Colony girls.
Freshman leads Wasilla girls
It didn’t take long for Ceil Dunleavy to take a big leap in Alaska track and field.
The Wasilla freshman won an individual state title in the 4A girls high jump, with a mark of 5 feet, 2 inches, during the first day of the state track meet.
Dunleavy, who matched a career high with the mark, was the lone jumper to top the 5-foot mark.
Friday marked the third time this season that Dunleavy eclipsed the 5-foot mark. She hit 5-1 a the Palmer Invitational in early May, and 5-2 last week at the Region III Championships. She won the high jump in seven of the nine meets she competed in this season.
Dunleavy is the first girl in school history to win the high jump and the first Wasilla athlete to win the high jump since Lee Knowles captured the boys title in 1987 with a mark of 6-4. The last Valley girl to win the 4A high jump was Colony’s Shelby Beairsto in 2004 with a mark of 5-2.
Wasilla senior Mariah Burroughs capped her stellar high school running career with a second-place finish in the 1,600 meters. Burroughs was also sixth in the 800. WHS freshman Alex Mathis finished sixth in the 1,600 and 3,200 races.
Wasilla also placed a pair of athletes in the top 5 of the girls’ shot put. Cassidy Edwards was fourth and Sylvia Tuisaula finished fifth.
Wasilla finished 11th in the girls team standings with 27 points.
WHS athlete leads Valley boys
Matt Thomas recorded the Valley’s top finish in the 4A boys class, finishing third in the 300-meter hurdles.
Lucas Jones led Colony with a fourth-place finish in the long jump. Fischer Summers placed in both 4A boys throwing events. Summers was fifth in the shot put and sixth in the discus.
Dimond won the boys team title. Colony was 12th and Wasilla finished 14th in the team standings.
Houston senior lands top-3 finishes
Houston senior Matt Barron finished with a pair of top-3 finishes in the boys 123A class.
Barron finished second in the triple jump Friday, hitting a mark of 40-1.25. He was third in the long jump on Saturday.
Ayla Looper led Susitna Valley with a second-place finish in the high jump and third-place finish in the girls 123A 400. Rekia Hueton was fourth for the Rams in the shot put and sixth in the discus.
