Knights open swim season with sweep of Colony Tri

PALMER — The Colony Knights swept the team standings of the first meet of the 2014 prep swimming and diving season.

Colony finished with 149 yards to place first in the boys’ standings, and collected 125 points to win the girls class.

Wasilla edged Palmer for second place in the boys’ standings. The Warriors finished with 83 points, just ahead of third-place Palmer. The Palmer girls posted a second-place finish in the standings with 102 points. Wasilla was third in the girls’ standings with 69.

A group of Knights set a school record en route to the win in the boys’ class. Zach Bloom, Joseph Anderson, Jake Simmons and Elliot Amoto combined to post a time of 1 minute, 43.46 seconds in the 200-yard medley relay.

Bloom, a Colony senior, also broke a longstanding school record in the 500-yard freestyle. Bloom posted a time of 4:53.95, breaking the 15-year-old mark of 4:55.76 set by former Knights swimmer Nick Foley.

Bloom and Anderson won a pair of events each. Bloom finished first in the 500 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Anderson was first in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke.

Elliot Amato (50 freestyle) and Jake Simmons (100 butterfly) also won events for Colony.

Sarah Hanson (200 freestyle), Millie Snelders (200 individual medley) and Rachel Hanson (50 freestyle) won events for the Palmer girls. Ashley Phillips (100 butterfly) and Cheyanne Sundberg (500 freestyle) led the Wasilla girls with wins. Sierra Kenworthy (100 freestyle) and Anne Sullivan (100 breaststroke) won events for the Colony girls.
