Knights open wrestling season with win at Houston tourney

WASILLA — The Colony Knights used wins in five different weight classes to open the prep wrestling season with a victory in the team standings of The Altercation at Houston High School.

Defending state champions Robert Haan and Levi Hopkins were among the five Knights to win their weight class, and help Colony finish at the top of the team standings with 204 total points. Haan, the state champion at 170 pounds last year, finished first at 182. Hopkins, the defending state champ at 120, was first at 138. Vincent Cramer (106), Rush Fannon (113) and Caleb Hopkins (160) also finished first for Colony.

Wasilla finished second in the team standings with 167 total points. Defending state champion Micah Mathis was won of four Warriors to win their weight class. Mathis, the champ at 113 last season, finished first at 126 Saturday. Freshman Hunter Hayes made his prep debut, with a first-place finish at 120. Veterans Hayden Steiner (152) and Chase Minnick (220) also finished first.

Senior Marshall Pinard led Susitna Valley by winning the 285-pound bracket.
