Hayden VanderPool led the Colony Knights girls wrestling team to a third-place finish in the Mountain City Christian Invitational in Anchorage on Saturday.
VanderPool earned an 11-4 decision over Mount Edgecumbe’s Nevaeh George in the 114-pound final. The Knights finished with 138 total points in the team standings.
VabderPool was one of three Valley grapplers to win their weight class. Palmer’s Lillie Vansiegman beat Newhalen’s Pagen Lester 5-2 in the 120-pound final. Wasilla’s Brynlee Lutz earned a 10-0 major decision over Chugiak’s Annika Johnson to win at 138 pounds.
Palmer and Redington both finished with 87 points in the team standings, and were fifth and sixth overall. Wasilla was eighth with 85.5 points.
Colony’s Grace Loutzenhiser (100) and Noelle Buck (235); Palmer’s Sarah Callender (128) and Kaylee Paaulson (165); Redington’s Nikayla Miller (185); and Wasilla’s Taryn Wright (132) also advanced to the finals and placed second.
Wasilla led Mat-Su teams with a fourth-place finish in the Halloween Monster Bash Duals at South Anchorage High School. Colony was fifth and Palmer finished seventh.
Wasilla and Colony were 3-4 in duals in seven rounds, and Palmer was 1-6.
