WASILLA -- Speed kills, especially when the opponent is a little gassed.
The Wasilla Warriors had the unfortunate luck of facing cross-town rivals and Region III powers on back-to-back nights last weekend. After losing a very intense and emotional contest by just two points to Palmer the night before, the speed of the Colony Knights was to much for the Warriors as Colony sprinted to a 52-42 win over the Warriors at Wasilla High School on Saturday.
"I thought (Friday) night Wasilla played tremendous," Colony head coach Jeff Bowker said. "It is hard playing night to night with the same level of intensity."
Colony broke open a close game in the second quarter. Holding a slim 12-10 lead with just more than six minutes remaining in the second frame, the Knights ran away with an 18-6 run.
Ryan Gray and Justin Schwartzbauer combined for 12 points in a quarter when the Knights capitalized off a handful of Warrior turnovers.
"We knew they were stiff and sore, we just ran the ball," Schwartzbuar said.
A pair of former Warriors proved to be key in the Colony win in their return to the Wasilla gym. Ricky Cunningham and Tim Egger combined for just 12 points, but each provided Colony with a needed pressence in the paint.
"Ricky came up big on the boards and Tim on defense, against their old school," Schwartzbauer said.
With the win Colony improved to 7-3 in Region III play. Wasilla finished the regular season at 5-5 in the region.
