TALKEETNA— The Colony Knights varsity swept the team standings at the 2008 Mat-Su Borough Cross Country Ski Championships in Talkeetna on Saturday.
Colony placed four skiers in the top five to win the girls team title. Colony’s Heidi Doner crossed the finish line in 27 minutes and 16 seconds, 21 seconds behind first-place Kimberly Del Frate of Palmer, to lead the Knights with a second-place finish.
Three of Doner’s teammates followed closely behind. Sydney Stewart (27:24) was third, Caitlin Skvorc (28:14) finished fourth and Ellen VanGorder (28:20) was fifth in the 6.6-kilometer classic.
With her individual title, Del Frate helped the Moose claim second in the team standings. Teammates Shannon Stough (seventh) and Claire Woodings (eighth) also finished in the top-10.
Cori Schleich led the Warriors with a 15th-place finish.
Four Colony skiers placed in the top eight to help the CHS boys claim first in the team standings.
Mason Wick led the Knights with a third-place finish. He crossed the finish line at the 33:17 mark. Dave Gray (34:57) was fifth, Sean Boyden (35:39) finished seventh and Robert Wise (35:40) placed eighth for the Knights.
Susitna Valley’s Galen Johnston won the individual title with a time of 30:55. He was one of two Rams to finish in the top four. Ian Mannix finished fourth at 34:31.
Dunedin Strickland (32:52) led Palmer to a second-place finish in the team standings with a second-place effort in the 10-K classic.
