PALMER — Members of the Colony Knights track and field team have spent time in recent practices shoveling snow off their track. Wednesday, the Knights had the chance to hit the track without their shovels and swept the team standings of the first Valley meet of the year.
Colony captured first in both the boys’ and girls’ classes during the Mat Valley Mini at Colony High.
The Knights boys and girls combined for five individual wins and three relay victories during the seven-school meet. Senior Jon Pomrenke used a personal best time of 22.79 seconds in the 200 meters to help the Knights amass 167 total points in the boys team standings. Brayden Reeves also finished with a personal record in the triple jump, and finished first with a leap of 38 feet, seven inches. Jarek Schultz added a victory in the boys’ discus.
Presley Peterson led the Colony girls with a win in the girls’ triple jump, hitting 31-7.5 along the way. Hannah Tennesen finished first in the girls’ shot put.
Colony also won the boys and girls 400-meter relay events, and the girls 3,200 relay.
Allison VanPelt and Olivia Davies each won a pair of events for Wasilla, which finished second in the girls’ team standings with 90 points. VanPelt scored a personal record time of 1:03.63 with her win in the 400 meters. She also won the 1,600. Davies, a prep basketball standout, enjoyed an impressive debut for the Wasilla track team. Davies won the girls’ long jump with a leap of 17-3, a distance that is better than any mark recorded during the 2017 4A girls state meet.
Davies also finished first in the 300 hurdles. Cheyenne Green won the discus for the Wasilla girls.
Wyatt Helton led the Wasilla boys with a first-place finish in the long jump. Amiqaq Maclean was first in the 400 for the Palmer boys.
Throwers lead Knights in Anchorage track and field meet
The throwers helped the Colony boys open their season with a top-3 finish during the Pro/Whit Championship April 6-7 at The Dome in Anchorage.
Four different Knights placed in the boys’ shot put and discus as Colony finished with 69 total points in the team standings. Senior Jarek Schultz won the discus with a throw of 129 feet, 4 inches, and also placed eighth in the shot put. Andres Ramirez-Nunn used a personal best of 44-2 to finish as the runner-up in the shot put. Bale Carr was fourth in the shot and Jon Pomrenke finished eighth in the discus.
