PALMER — Colton Spencer signed his National Letter of Intent to play basketball at Lewis-Clark College on Wednesday. Friday night, Spencer showed fans why he has the opportunity to play at the next level next season.
Spencer scored 21 points in the first half and led Colony to an 83-51 win over rival Palmer at Colony High School. Spencer, among the seniors honored Friday on the school’s senior night, hit five three-pointers in the first half, and helped the Knights put together a 25-point first quarter. Spencer finished with 23 in the game.
Patrick McMahon scored a game-high 25 points in the win. Wyatt Baker, another senior, added 13.
Colony improved to 7-0 in Northern Lights Conference play. The Knights close their regular season March 6 at Wasilla.
The Knights jumped out to a 25-14 first-quarter lead. Colony was able to extend its double-digit halftime lead with 21 points in the third.
Lavar Marshall led Palmer with 16 points in the loss. Marshall scored nine of Palmer’s 12 third-quarter points. Elijah Evans and James Rogers chipped in seven each.
Palmer dropped to 2-5 in league play with the loss. The Moose host Soldotna March 7 in a key conference game. As of Friday, four of the NLC’s five boys teams are not separated by much. Wasilla and Soldotna are tied in second at 3-4, Kodiak is fourth at 3-5 and Palmer is fifth at 2-5.
Colony girls get past Moose
Tori Schwantes used a big first half to help Colony score a 56-32 win over Palmer Friday night.
Schwantes scored 14 of her game-high 18 points during the first two quarters. Indiya Clarke added 10 and Maggie Spencer chipped in nine.
Colony improved to 6-1 in NLC play. The Knights are at Wasilla (7-0) March 7.
The Knights opened the game on a 17-4 run, and didn’t allow a Palmer point until Danielle Umbarger hit a three with 4:33 left in the first quarter.
Liv Solis led the Moose with eight points. Palmer dropped to 2-5 in NLC play, and cap its regular season March 8 against Soldotna at PHS.
Wasilla girls win battle of top-5 teams
The Wasilla Warriors came away with a win in a battle of the top 5 4A girls teams in the state. Wasilla beat Lathrop 53-37 Friday night at Wasilla High School.
Lathrop is ranked second in the latest Alaska Association of Basketball Coaches 4A girls poll, and Wasilla is fifth.
Bella Hays led Wasilla with 17 points and 20 rebounds in the win. Hays had 13 defensive boards, and seven on the offensive side. Sierra Baird added a dozen, and Jordyn Cox and Harmony McSorley chipped in 10 each.
Hawks sweep North Pole
Houston stormed to an 84-17 boys basketball win over North Pole Thursday at Houston High School. Kyle McLaughlin led Houston with 26 points. Braden Cork added 16. Landon Taylor finished with nine.
The Houston girls beat the Patriots 48-27. Emily Bitler finished with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Denali Whitted added 10 points.
Redington boys fall in Kodiak
Kodiak scored a 64-32 win over Kodiak Friday in Kodiak. Ruben Bond led the Huskies with 13.
