Knights sweep weight person’s relay events at Palmer Invite

PALMER — Organizers of Palmer High School’s annual track and field meet have long added something different to the list of events. The weight person’s relay.

This is where athletes put down the shot put and discus, and hit the track. Saturday, the Colony Knights swept the events. Colony won both the girls’ and boys’ weight person’s relay during the final day of the Palmer Invitational at Palmer High School.

Grace Looney, Kristian Tennesen, Amber Soliday and Aleah Yundt combined to post a time of 1 minute, 0.71 seconds to win the girls’ event, a 400-meter relay. Blake Carr, Cameron Pead, Andres Ramirez-Nunn and Jarek Schultz used a time of 52.07 to win it for the Colony boys.

Valley athletes also scored top-3 finishes in the throwing events. Tennesen, the defending state champion in the girls’ discus, used a season-best throw of 118 feet, 6 inches to finish second in the event. Palmer senior Emma Uschmann notched a personal record with a throw of 101-0 and third-place finish.

Pead finished third in the boys’ shot put with a personal record throw of 44-2.25.

Palmer’s Lev Robertson and Wasilla’s Ceil Dunleavy also used personal records to win events. Robertson won the boys’ 800 with a time of 2:00.98. Dunleavy, the three-time defending state champion in the high jump, hit a personal record of 5-8 to win the event.

Palmer’s Madi Ko and Donovan Eiman each scored a personal record in the triple jump, and both finished second. Ko hit a distance of 34-8.5 for the girls, while Eiman reached 42-8.5 in the boys’ event.

Palmer’s Matthew Daniels also finished second in the boys’ 110 hurdles.
