Austin Fangmann scored the biggest goal of his young high school career.
The sophomore forward sent a shot into the back of the net with six seconds left in regulation to lift the Colony Knights to a 2-1 win over rival Wasilla during the quarterfinal round of the ASAA First National Cup Division I state championships Thursday night at the Menard Arena in Wasilla.
Fangmann created a turnover beyond the blue line, picked up the puck and ripped a shot from the top of the right wing circle into the top shelf of the net to help sixth-seeded Colony upset the third-seeded Warriors. With the win, Colony advanced to the semifinals and will face Railbelt rival West Valley Friday at 4 p.m. at the Menard. West Valley beat Dimond 3-1 earlier in the day.
Matthew Ross also scored for Colony, giving the Knights a 1-0 lead with 5:43 left in the second.
Robert Mikulecky scored midway through the third to tie the score at 1. The Wasilla junior fired a shot from the top of the left wing circle into the top corner of the net.
The Warriors will face Dimond Friday at 1:30 p.m. in an elimination game.
In other action in the first round, West Anchorage blasted Eagle River 7-0 and Chugiak edged South Anchorage 3-2 in overtime.
West and Chugiak will play Friday at 6:30 p.m. in the other semifinal.
