Knights win Arizona tourney

PHOENIX, ARIZ. — The Colony Knights may have learned something about themselves Monday, something future opponents might want to take note of.

Colony erased an early 19-4 deficit to score a 57-50 overtime win over Friends Seminary, N.Y., in the championship game of its bracket during the final day of the Cactus Jam in Phoenix, Ariz.

Colony head coach Tom Berg said what the Knights showed during the rally is exactly what he wants to see from his team this season.

“We always talk about that grinder mentality,” Berg said by cellphone from Arizona Monday afternoon. “We’re going to be that team that plays for 32 minutes. That’s the profile we want to have. That’s the profile we’re going to have if we want to be successful.”

Colony chewed into the Friends lead late in the first quarter and in the second, and trailed by only four at the intermission. Colony outscored Friends 25-21 during the final two quarters to force overtime. Berg said the Knights hit a shot early in overtime, and then it came down to a battle at the free throw line.

“Damien Fulp, Anton Chamblee and Bailey West all hit big free throws,” Berg said

West scored a team-high 18 points and was named most valuable player of the bracket.

“Bailey, in particular, rebounded the ball very well,” Berg said of the sophomore. “He’s become more and more efficient. He’s going to hit the shot when’s open. When teams double him, he’s going to find the open guy.”
