Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

WASILLA — With nearly 500 swimmers and divers from across the state participating, athletes aren’t going to find a regular season test bigger than the Bartlett/Chugiak Invitational.
And if results from the biggest meet of the year are any indication, a few a Valley athletes should be among the best Alaska has to offer.
Colony’s Joseph Anderson and Jake Simmons, and Wasilla’s Brayden Schachle each won events during the invitational, Saturday at Bartlett High School.
Anderson bagged one title, and finished as the runner-up in a second event. The Colony standout won the 200 individual medley, with a time of 2 minutes, 5.39 seconds. Anderson was second in the 100 breaststroke.
Simmons used his time of 53.92 to win the 100 butterfly. Simmons finished third in the 100 backstroke. Simmons also broke his own school record in the backstroke, setting a new mark with a time of 55.44 in the event. Simmons now owns two individual Colony school records, 100 butterfuly and 100 backstroke, and a share of two relay records, the 400 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay.
Schachle, a defending state champion in the dive, won the boys’ 1-meter dive Saturday. Schachle finished with a total score of 419.80, beating runner-up Ethan Larson of Bartlett by more than 30 points. Colony’s Adam Belliston finished third.
Simmons and Anderson helped Colony finish third overall in the boys’ team standings. The Knights finished with 68 total points, a dozen behind Region III rival Soldotna. Dimond won the boys team title with 123 total points.
The Colony girls finished fifth in the team standings, and the Knights were the top Region III team with 41 total points.
Camille Dayton notched a pair of runner-up finishes for the Knights, placing second in the girls’ 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke. Yanne Toussaint finished third in the girls’ 100 freestyle for Colony.
Max Snelders led the Palmer Moose with a third-place finish in the boys’ 100 freestyle.
Next on the swim schedule is the Valley Invitational, which starts Thursday at the Palmer Pool. More than a dozen schools will compete in the meet, which runs through Saturday. The preliminary diving rounds start Thursday at 3:30 p.m. Diving semifinals begin Friday at 8:15 a.m., and swimming preliminaries are expected to start Friday at 12:15 p.m. Finals are scheduled for Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
