Knights win Glenn Vandergaw wrestling tournament

ANCHORAGE — Led by a pair of individual champions, the Colony Knights won the team title at the Glenn Vandergaw Invitational at Dimond High School Saturday.

Bryce Adams and Wade Booth each won their respective weight classes to help Colony finish with 125.5 total points.

Adams pinned his way to the 98-pound title. After a first-round bye, Adams pinned Val Suman of West Anchorage during the final second of the first period. He followed by pinning Palmer’s Odin Anderson in 41 seconds in the semifinals.

Adams posted a third-period pin of Dimond’s Scott Harris in the championship round.

Booth earned two wins by technical fall and another by major decision en route to his title at 152 pounds. Booth opened with a 19-3 win over Ketchikan’s Tim McBurnette in the first round before beating Wasilla’s Wyatt Nelson 15-0 in the second round. Booth reached the finals with a 14-0 win over West’s Chardo Elliot.

In the finals, Booth received a forfeit victory.

Chase Booth (113) and Robert Haan (138) each reached the finals and placed second for the Knights.

Wasilla moved four wrestlers into the finals and finished second in the team standings with 114.5 points.

The 220-pound bracket featured an all-Warrior final. Quace Wright edged teammate Zech Rockstad 3-2 in double-overtime to win the class. Wright and Rocksted also met in the Lancer Smith final earlier this season.

Wasilla’s Chance Boatman upset the top seed of the 170-pound class in the finals to win his weight class. Boatman pinned Eagle River’s Xavier Horton at the four-minute mark.

Brandon Abbott also advanced to the finals and finished second at 106.

Caleb Deemer represented Palmer in the finals and won the 195-pound class. Deemer opened with a 20-5 win by technical fall over West Valley’s Brett Ferris and followed with a 10-4 win over Kenai’s Tyler Brown. Deemer pinned Eagle River’s Ed Hall at the 5:20 mark to win his class.
