There’s a new hockey tradition in the Palmer area, and the Colony Knights scored the first chance to celebrate.
The Knights hoisted the Sudzy Salmon Challenge Cup following a 6-1 win over the Moose Friday night at the MTA Events Center in Palmer. The Palmer High School hockey booster club came up with the idea to officially recognize the regular season series that includes the two varsity prep hockey teams in the Palmer area. The Knights swept the two-game series this season, and the Sudzy Salmon Challenge Cup traveling trophy will find a home at Colony High until next year.
Dane Jellich used a four-point night to help Colony score its second win over Palmer of the season. Jellich bagged two goals and assisted on two others. Jacob Ross, Carson McLaughlin and Terje McLaughlin also scored for Colony.
Jeremy Horacek scored the lone goal for the Moose. Colony outshot Palmer 41-15.
Palmer 3, Juneau 0
Palmer blanked Juneau 3-0 Thursday night at the MTA Events Center in Palmer.
The Moose scored all three goals in the third period and TJ O’Rourke notched a 12-save shutout. Alex Nelius, Matthew Johnson and Jeremy Horacek scored goals. Carter Greco led Palmer with two assists.
Palmer outshout Juneau 27-12.
Houston 2, Juneau 1
The Houston Hawks scored a 2-1 win over Juneau Friday at the Big Lake Recreation Center.
Isaiah Squires scored the game-winner, notching a goal with just more than 11 minutes left in regulation. Spencer Hogan gave Houston a 1-0 lead early in the second period.
Juneau outshot Houston 29-9, but Houston goalie Josh Smoldon had a big night with 27 saves.
South 2, Wasilla 1
South Anchorage edged Wasilla 2-1 Thursday in Anchorage.
South scored twice I a span of less than a minute early in the third period to take a lead. Zach Roush scored with about five minutes left to cut South’s lead in half.
