Knights win Valley Quad track meet

PALMER — Chase Stephens and Brandon Nicholson each won three events to lead Colony to a lopsided win in the combined team scores of the Valley Quad at Wasilla High School Saturday.

Stephens, part of the defending state champion Colony girls team, finished first in the 100 meters, 100 hurdles and triple jump. Nicholson swept the boys’ jumping events, finishing first in the high jump, long jump and triple jump. Peggy Mathis, who won four individual titles at the state meet last year, finished first in the 300 hurdles and long jump Saturday. Jordyn Block (800) and Cathelyne Powers (1,600) also won events for the Colony girls. Hunter Harwood (100), Isaiah Tira (110 hurdles) and Asa Walling (discus) won individual events for the Colony boys.

The Knights also captured wins in the girls 800, 1,600 and 3,200 relays, and boys 400 and 800 relays.

Colony finished with 435 total points in the team standings.

With a handful of wins in the distance events, Palmer finished second with 285 points. Sami Contraras and Josiah Alverts won the girls and boys 3,200-meter races. The Palmer boys also notched wins in the 1,600 and 3,200 relays.

Rya Berrigan was first in the 400 for the Palmer girls, and Ryker Carrington (shot put), Tyler Spatz (400) and Matthew Daniels (300 hurdles) won events for the Palmer boys.

Quincy Fuller led third-place Wasilla with a pair of victories. Fuller was first in the 800 and 1,600. Joshua Wilcox won the 200 for the WHS boys. Sylvia Tuisaula (shot put) and Ceil Dunleavy (high jump) notched individual wins for the Wasilla girls, who also scored a victory in the 400 relay.

Kimberly Quincy led Houston with a victory in the girls’ discus.
